In 2006, Rhodes Rugby consisted of three main sides, namely the U21A and B and, Open 1sts. These three sides competed in the Border league
and were highly successful. The U21A side had a very successful season in which they went unbeaten until being narrowly beaten by Buffs
in the semi final. This was an unlucky result for the side that had performed so well throughout the season and had earlier beaten
the same buffs side by over 20 points. Before 2006, the first side had always been a more less organised outfit and very little
effort was made by external forces to include them in fixtures and a competitive league. As a result, through dedication and
persistence from some of the older players, Rhodes was given a trial period in the Eastern Province Super League in order to
prove themselves. The 1st XV went on to have a superb season where the team made the quater finals for the E.P league but
were unable to play the fixture due to Varsity vacations. This fantastic result has seen the 1st XV, 1st XV Reserves,
2nd XV and U 21A sides promoted to the E.P Super League on a full time basis for 2007. This will expose our players
to far more competitive sides, more superior rugby, and greater organisation compared to what they have previously
been used to in the Border League.

2007 will see a new dimension to added to Rhodes Rugby. In order to play in the E.P Super League, Rhodes is required to field four teams,
namely a 1st XV, 1st XV Reserve side, 2nd XV and U21A side. It has been announced that Albany Rugby Club will be acting as Rhodes' 2nd XV
in order for the Rhodes Rugby Club to be able to field all the proposed teams. This is an exciting venture for Albany as they re-establish
themselves as a competitive rugby side for 2007 and furthermore, will aim to strengthen the Rhodes' sides where necessary.

Antoher exciting prospect for the Rugby Club in 2007 is the merging of the Rugby Club and the Touch Rugby Club. The Touch Rugby sides,
both women and mixed, were involved in two very successful tours in 2006. More on this under the Touch Rugby Website.

Coaches Contracted for 2008 Season

In the 2008 season, Rhodes Rugby is going to be encouraging and expecting complete dedication from the players that have committed to the Rugby Club. However in order to achieve this and ensure that the players are developing and succeeding, Rhodes University Rugby Club has hired four highly knowledgeable coaches. This ensures that each rugby side at Rhodes University has its own specific coach that will be able to take responsibility, and focus on, their allocated team. Furthermore, the influence of Moses Bailey will be instrumental in understanding and adapting to the new rules after his experience in Australia in 2007.

The four coaches that have been contracted for the 2008 season are:

Sandile: 1st Team Coach
Moses Bailey: Assistant 1st XV Coach
Stuart Baillie: 1st Reserves Coach
Pierre Jacobs: U21 Coach

Date: Tuesday 19 February
Time: 6-8PM
Venue: Alec Mullins Hall

Tuesday 19 Feb will host the Sports Sign-Up Evening between 6 - 8PM in Alec Mullins Hall. All people who intend to be a part of, and play for the Rhodes Rugby Club or Rhodes Touch Rugby Club have to sign up to the Rhodes Rugby Club at Sports Sign Up. Once a member of the Rhodes Rugby Club, members are then invited to partake in all the clubs activities such as cheese and wines etc! Furthermore, being a member of the club ensures the possibility of being selected for SAU (South African Universities Rugby Tournament) and the Tri-varsity sides.

Practices

Day: Tuesday and Thursday
Time: 6 - 7 30PM
Venue: Great Field

Practices have begun and will take place Tuesday and Thursday between 6 - 7 30PM. It is vital that all the players wishing to participate attend practices asap as sides will be selected for trials shortly. Therafter, all Rhodes Rugby sides have matches starting early in March. Rhodes Rugby was awarded the most improved club of the year in 2007 and is going to get stronger in 2008 so please encourage all your mates to attend and try out.

Thoughts for the Rugby Website 2008

This website aims to provide all the information players and committee members will need regarding the club in terms of season details etc. With this in mind, once the season gets underway, this website aims to include the following for 2008:

- Player statistics and general background information
- Weekly team lists
- Fixtures
- Travelling arangements
- Post-game summaries, comments and criticism
- Game results
- Advertising of upcoming games and events
- Development information and events
- Awards
- Supplement prices

The site also aims to offer a source of entertainment for players and spectators alike. In this light, regular photo galleries will be posted. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please add comments with your ideas.
